The hilly landscape of Odsherred is known by most. Partly because many in their schooling in geography teaching have become acquainted with the ice age landscape as an example of how meltwater and moraine eels form the landscape after the ice for approx. 10,000 years ago disappeared.

Today, the moraine landscape is a major reason why many people visit Odsherred during the holiday season due to the fine bathing beaches and the beautifully hilly landscape. But other periods of time have also affected this part of Denmark. The many burial mounds of the Bronze Age adorn and break the landscape in particular. Dragsholm Castle from the middle of the 1100s is the striking building that meets one as you pass the draught, the narrow passage that made Odsherred before the drying of Lammefjord not an island.

Today's landscape is thus formed by both nature's own forces and the results of the 19th century engineering companies building dams over the Lammefjord, so that the pumps could begin to draw the water away from the fjord and form the agricultural land that has been known for tulip cultivation and the now grand cru prized carrots.

The tourists came to Odsherred as early as the late 1800s. The railroad became a reality in 1899 and the ferry connection to Jutland, Molslinien, was established in 1966. Oddsherred was then linked with the rest of Denmark infrastructure. And the region has benefited.

Today, Odsherred is home to approx. 32,500 permanent residents, centering around the three major cities: Nykøbing Sj., Vig and Asnæs.
