ANE MARGRETHE FREDERIKSDATTERS AND HANS LARSENS WORLD

Ane Margrethe Frederiksdatter was born in Høve in Odsherred, where her father Frederik Hansen was a mill turner on Høve Mill when she was born.

Ane Margrethe lived most of her life in Højby (pictured), and had an out-of-wedlock child, Hans Hansen, who became my great-grandfather.

Ane Margrethe Frederiksdatter was born October 9, 1833 in Høve, a small town in Asnæs parish.

The parents were Frederik Hansen and Karen Madsdatter who were married on June 21, 1833 in Asnæs Church. Frederik was a mill turner on Høve Mølle with his father's wife's brother Møller Jens Pedersen, and Karen and Frederik were about to create a good life and a good family for themselves.

It sadly happened that Ane Margrethe died just 9 days old, on October 18, 1833. So you could say that they did not get a very lucky start. However, it did not take courage from them.
For as early as November 1833, they started trying again to create a good family, and the result came August 30, 1834.

The child was baptized on September 7 in Asnæs church, and named Ane Margrethe Frederiksdatter.

One can reasonably say that this was Margrethe on the 2nd.

Later, Frederik Hansen and Karen Madsdatter had 7 more children who all survived and became adults, so despite an unfortunate start they nevertheless created a good family.

By 1840, Ane Margrethe had turned 6 years old. The family had moved to a man's place in Gudmindrup (sometimes called Gudmandrup), Højby where Ane Margrethe was now living with her parents, and the two smaller siblings, Marie and Jens Peder, who had come.
With them lived also Karen Madsdatter's father Mads Hansen.

It is worth a thought that Frederik Hansen's uncle, Jens Pedersen, Møller on Høve Mølle, whom Frederik had a close relationship with, and who died at the age of just 41 in 1836, may have contributed to the name of Ane Margrethe's younger brother Jens Peder who was born August 27, 1838. Not least when you consider that Jens Peder was Frederik's first child after the death of Møller Jens Pedersen, and that Frederik chose to be best man to Møller's widow, Karen Nielsdatters, marriage to her second husband, husband Niels Jensen, the February 2, 1838 in Asnæs church.

In 1845, the family still lived in Højby, and a little brother, Hans, had arrived in the meantime. His was perhaps named after Frederik's father Hans Peter Linaa. Frederik lived of his land, which indicates that a landowner's land in Odsherred was not so poor. The soil in Odsherred was a very fine quality and has yielded good yields. In this case, safe enough to feed, and support Frederik Hansen's family.

On April 15, 1849, Ane Margrethe Frederiksdatter was confirmed in Højby Church.
Confirmation age also meant that now you were ready to come out and serve. And that came Ane Margrethe.
Thus, in 1850, she was a servant of the landlord Propreitarian Cand: Juriis, Jacob Holm and his wife Emma Hendrine Dorthea Trock, as well as their two children, at Ellingegaard.

A little history about Ellingegård
The picture shows Ellingegård approx. year 1910.
In the Middle Ages, Ellingegård was the largest farm in the village of Ellinge. Up until the Reformation, the farm was owned by Roskilde Bishop, who sat heavily on the estates in Odsherred. After the Reformation in 1536, the farm passed to the Crown, where it was laid out for various magistrates. From 1567 Ellingegård was laid under the king's mighty castle in Odsherred, Dragsholm.

From 1694 the farm was merged with the neighboring Anneberggård, whereby the farm again obtained main court rights. The two farms remained merged throughout the 18th century, but had many changing owners. In 1776 the farms returned to the Crown, but from 1790 they were managed by Frederik Wilhelm Trojel, who carried out the agricultural forms on the two farms. The replacement of the village community was completed so that the individual farmer's land was collected and his farm moved from the village to the new land. At the same time, the hovering obligation was removed and new buildings were erected on the main courtyards. In 1804 the replacements were completed and Trojel bought Anneberggaard himself, while Ellingegaard was taken over by the former lessor H.J. Egtved.

After that, the farm had changing owners. The farm was greatly expanded from 1915 to 1922, after which the farm adjacent to the following owners is again increased.

Ane Margrethe was 16 years old, and was abslout at the bottom of the manor's rank, where, in addition to the Holm family, 26 people lived and worked, most of them as servants.
Ellingegård was part of Det Kgl. Odsherredske Gods, and over time has been associated with both Anneberggaard and Dragsholm Castle.
The farm has always been run as an independent manor, regardless of current affiliation.

It is not known for certain how long Ane Margrethe stayed at Ellingegård, but we know that at some point between 1850 and 1853, she traveled to farm owner Niels Jensen in Stenstrup, and we know that on 2 November 1853 she traveled from Niels Jensen to Peder Larsen in Yderby.

However, she did not stay with Peder Larsen for a long time, because on February 1, 1855, she was in the service of hereditary farmer Hans Larsen and his wife Anne Marie Madsen in Overby. We know that Ane Margrethe was with Hans Larsen for 1½ years, and that she travels from Overby and Peder Larsen on May 1, 1855. So with a little head bill we can calculate that she must have traveled from Peder Larsen in Yderby, to Hans Larsen in Overby approx. December 1, 1853.

As mentioned, Ane Margrethe traveled from Yderby on May 1, 1855, as shown in the picture of the departure list above. It also shows that she has stayed in the parish for 1½ years and that she has a good testimony. So Ane Margrethe had done well, and had a good recommendation, which was vitally important for servicemen if they were not to end up on the farm.
But one more important thing is evident from this departure list, which we are looking at here. It is clear that Ane Margrethe went to a new place at school holder Hansen in Sonnerup. Sonnerup is located in Højby parish, so Ane Margrethe was on the way home again.

Ane Margrethe was a young, and most certainly also beautiful, unmarried woman of 21 years old when she arrived at School Holder Jens Hansen's household in 1855. At the school in Sonnerup there has probably not been the large selection of fresh young men that Ane Margrethe could enter the dance, and have fun together with, so Ane has with great pleasure participated in the festivities that have been possible to attend out there in the countryside in Højby parish in northwestern Zealand where she was. In the autumn of 1856 she was thus almost self-written to attend the region's harvest parties, which were often held on farms in barns and in courtyards in the month of October, after the end of a good harvest.

I am sure it is on such an occasion that Ane Margrethe and servant Hans Larsen have had a swing or two, which, in the freshly harvested hay and straw, has evolved into little more than that. The result, Hans Hansen - my great-grandfather and the direct reason why I can sit and write this story - came in the month of July 1857. Read more about Hans Hansen here.

Hans Hansen's father was laid by his mother to be Hans Larsen, and we must take this to believers partly because the two did not get married and partly because no contribution or alimony case can be found between them. That case has probably been "settled amicably" between Frederik Hansen and Hans Larsen.

In any case, Ane Margrethe, along with his son Hans, was back with their parents Frederik Hansen and Karen Madsdatter in February 1860.
Here Hans also had really nice conditions because Frederik and Karen's smallest child, Boline, was just 2 years older than Hans. In addition, another 3 of Frederik and Karen's children, aged from 8 to 14 years, were living at this time. So there have been plenty of good powers to look after little Hans and to take care of him. Fortunately, this arrangement worked really well. At least Hans Hansen stayed with his grandfather and grandmother right up until the age of graduation.

But Ane Margrethe also had to find her happiness.
On May 19, 1865, she was devoted to her heart's excellency, the bachelor Lars Nielsen who served at Ellingegård, and who, incidentally, was 8 years younger than Ane Margrethe. The two should come together to create a small good and solid family together.
Ane Margrethe was 4 months pregnant with their first child when they got married, and I am sure that she would not experience giving birth to a "illegitimate" child again, so now it should be.

As mentioned, Ane Margrethe and Lars founded their family immediately. On October 22, 1865, their first child, a son, was born and was baptized Laurits Peter Nielsen. There was no doubt that Lars and Ane Margrethe wanted each other, because already on November 23, 1867, their next child, another son, was born and was baptized Niels Christian Nielsen.
So the two quickly had a good time in creating a good, stable family together.
There was, however, with Hans, who lived and prospered with his grandfather and grandmother, Frederik Hansen and Karen Madsdatter, in Højby. But that problem was solved by Ane Margtrethe and Lars moving in as insiders with Lars' parents, Niels Larsen and Ane Larsdatter, who lived in Ellingehuse, just 4 km away from where Hans lived. In this way, Lars and Ane Margrethe were able to maintain, and maintain, a fine and functioning community in the family.
In 1870, Ane Margrethe lived with Niels Larsen and Ane Larsdatter together with his two boys. Lars is not here, he serves at Ellingegård, and is included in the census there.

In 1880, Ane Margrethes and Lars' next and last child was born.
Anna Caroline Marie Christine was born on July 21, 1874. By this time, Ane Margrethe and Lars had acquired their own residence. It was a tenant residence and Lars is stated to be a workman.
It has certainly been tough for them here in the late 1800s, when the industrial community was gradually taking over. Ane Margrethe was rounded up by a millmaker who later became a homemaker, and Lars was rounded by a homemaker. Both have served through their youth, and Lars throughout life, in agriculture. It has been difficult that the hand work in agriculture, to a large extent, was replaced by the work of machines and that a servant turned into a workman.
So in addition to the fact that the groups have been small, Ane Margrethe and Lars have also had a strain compared to the changing times. That's how relationships they lived under and raised their children under. At the same time, there was always a "real child" ghost in the background who could influence the perceptions of this small family. It's not just fun. But I'm sure the family has been together, including Frederik Hansen and Karen Madsdatter, and together they have met the challenges that have been underway.

In 1890, the family still lived in a rented house. Their youngest child, Anna Caroline Marie Christine, was still living at home and it seems there were more things going on at this time. The family had been through some very tough times and challenges, and this can only be admired.

Ane Margrethe Frederiksdatter died on August 23, 1898, just 7 days before her 59th birthday. She had had an eventful, a tough, a sweet, and a rich life. Not all things at the same time, but all things included in her life.

I'm proud to have an ane like Ane Margrethe.

Hans Larsen was born on January 2, 1835 in Eskildstrup, Vig Sogn. Hans Larsen's parents were husband Lars Mortensen, and wife Maren Eriksdatter. Hans was number 4 in the range of children, but something went wrong during childbirth. Already on January 9, 1835, the mother, Maren Eriksdatter, died at only 37 years of age. The father, Lars Mortensen, found 7-year-old Marie Jensdatter, who in 1840 is listed as a housekeeper. They apparently never got married, but it was undoubtedly Marie Jensdatter who took care of the children's upbringing.

Hans Larsen was a young and strong man who liked to travel around the mansion after work.
In 1850 Hans Larsen was thus employed by farm owner Niels Pedersen, in Egebjerg.

In the period thereafter, from 1853 to 1857, we can follow Hans Larsen as follows:

Hans was, as already mentioned, a young man traveling around and taking up work on the farms in Odsherred, where there was work to be done.
It is interesting that in 1856 we can find him in Højby, where also Ane Margrethe was at this time as mentioned. Hans Larsen, who we follow here, is the only Hans Larsen in the area who has the right age and is in the right place at the right time, so from this we assume that we have here the correct father of Hans Hansen.

But Hans Larsen, despite the trip in the hay with Ane Margrethe and the subsequent result, also continued in his life.
On December 3, 1858, he married Ane Kirstine Nielsdatter, daughter of husband Niels Jensen of Hølkerup, and his wife Bodil Nielsdatter.
Hans Larsen and Ane Kirstine Nielsdatter had 4 children together.

- Maren Cecilie born in 1862
- Niels Peter born in 1865
- Niels Sivert born in 1874 (mother Ane Kirstine was 44 when Niels Sivert was born)

By 1880, Hans Larsen had become a homeowner. He was now a woodworker, and Maren Cecilie and Niels Sivert were still living at home. Apparently a well-functioning family that had managed the cutters and made things work.

In February 1901 Hans Larsen and Ane Kristine were still living in the house in Eskildstrup, though they were both on old age support at this time.

Hans Larsen died on March 5, 1901 in Vig, and Ane Kristine died on January 8, 1926 in Vig.
