HANS OG CÆCILIE MARGRETHES WORLD

Hans and Cecilia both came from even conditions in Odsherred. Hans from Højby, and Cæcilie from Abildøre.

But here at Glostrupvej 33 in Egebjerg they created a large and healthy family with 10 children, only one of whom died as a child.

Here is the story of Hans and Cæcilie.

Hans Hansen was born July 30, 1857 in Gudmindrup, Højby, Odsherred.

The mother was Ane Margrethe Frederiksdatter of Gudmindrup, and laid-off childfather was Ungkarl Hans Larsen who at the time of birth served with Gaardmand Jørgen Madsen in Gudmindrup.

As a small curiosity, one of the godfathers at Hans Hansen's baptism was Ane Margrethe's brother Jens Peder Frederiksen.

Hans Hansen's mother Ane Margrethe Frederiksdatter was born in 1834 in Asnæs. In 1855, Ane Margrethe moved from a position as maid of the farmer Hans Larsen in Overby, Sjællands Odde to a place as maid of the school holder Jens Hansen in Sonnerup, Højby.

Ane Margrethe was a young, and surely also beautiful, unmarried woman of 21 years old when she arrived at School Holder Jens Hansen's household in 1855. At the school in Sonnerup there has probably not been the large selection of fresh young men with whom Ane Margrethe could enter the dance , and have fun together, so that Ane has quite happily participated in the festivities that have been possible to attend out there in the countryside in Højby parish in northwestern Zealand where she was. In the autumn of 1856 she was thus almost self-written to attend the region's harvest parties, which were often held on farms in barns and in courtyards in the month of October, after the end of a good harvest.

I am sure it is on such an occasion that Ane Margrethe and Hans Larsen have had a swing or two, which, in the freshly harvested hay and straw, has evolved into little more than that. The result, Hans Hansen, came as mentioned in the month of July 1857. Hans Hansen's father is, after all, laid down by the mother to be Hans Larsen, and that we must take to believers partly because the two did not get married and partly because no contribution can be found. - or alimony proceedings between them.

Hans Larsen was born on 2 january 1835 in Eskilstrup, Vig parish. In the mid-1850s, he was a healthy young and unmarried man, serving as a service man on many different farms in Odsherred. In the period we can follow Hans like this:

As mentioned, Hans Larsen was a fresh man who traveled around Odsherred and served in many places around the manor, and in 1856 we can find him in Højby, where Ane Margrethe was also mentioned at this time. Hans Larsen, who we follow here, is the only Hans Larsen in the area who has the right age and is in the right place at the right time, so from this we assume that we have here the correct father of Hans Hansen.

It is interesting that in 1857 Hans Larsen was to be found in Eskilstrup Vig parish, where he remained for the rest of his life, and likewise Ane Margrethe was back in Gudmindrup in 1860, together with the little Hans Hansen - but still without Hans Larsen .

Why was Hans Hansen so named Hans Hansen, one might reasonably ask?
Then there can be more explanations.

One may be that Ane Margrethe's father was named Frederik Hansen, and from there comes the surname Hansen, and her grandfather was Hans Peter Linaa and from there the surname is Hans.
Another might be that he was baptized with the surname Hansen because his father is called Hans by first name (patronymic) and that his first name is also directly after the father. It was her first-born son, and it may not be entirely unlikely that Ane Margrethe expected to marry Hans Larsen.

Regardless of what has influenced Hans Hansen's naming, we can see that he has come from quite regular conditions, but despite that, he managed to create a quite interesting life and quite interesting family.

Hans Hansen had some half-siblings on both his mother's and his father's side, but he had no direct siblings because his father and mother never got married.

However, there is little doubt that the children who were on his mother's side in her later marriage to Husband Lars Nielsen in Ellingehuse have in practice served as siblings to Hans Hansen because they have lived together to some extent - at least they have lived close on eachother. Hans lived in Guidmindrup, Højby with his grandfather Frederik Hansen, and the others lived as a family in Ellingehuse, Højby, with a distance of about 4 km. Ane Margrethe and Lars Nielsen were married on March 19, 1865 in Højby. Their children and thus Hans Hansen's half-siblings were:

Anna Caroline Marie Christine Nielsen born 1874

Hans Hansen, as mentioned, grew up with his grandfather Frederik Hansen in Gudmindrup where he was a foster child until after his confirmation in 1871.

Here is Hans in the census of 1860 where he lives with his mother lives with Frederik Hansen, by the census.

In 1870 in Højby where Hans was the foster child of Frederik Hansen, and Ane Margrethe lived in Ellinge Houses where she had married and had a family.

In 1870, Ane Frederiksen's family were tenants with Lars Nielsen's parents NIels Larsen and Ane Larsdatter, and they have had their first two children Laurits Peter, Niels Christian.

Lars Nielsen was not included in this census. He was probably out and serving, and was talking to where he was serving.

Here is Hans Hansen's Confirmation in 1871

In 1880 Hans Hansen was servant to lease man Jean Andre Svensson at Anneberggaard in Højby.

In 1884 Hans Hansen served at Braadegård, and the same year he was married on 20 August 1884 to Cæcilie Margrethe Christiansdatter in Egebjerg church

Cæcilie Margrethe Christiansdatter was born in Abildøre, Egebjerg on March 12, 1864, and was baptized in Egebjerg church on May 1 of that year.

A small curiosity is that one of the godfathers at her baptism was a sister to Cæcilie Margaret's mother, Dorothea Maria Pedersdatter from Braadegård because it indicates that the family had already had connections to Braadegård at an early stage. And Braadegård became quite important to Cæcilie Margrethe later in her life.

Her father was metal craftsman and crofter Niels Christian Christiansen, and her mother was Ane Kristine Pedersdatter. The couple got married in Egebjerg church in March 1862. Cæcilie Margrethe was their firstborn. Later, Cæcilie Margrethe had 3 siblings:

Anna Maria who was born in 1870
Kristian Jørgen who was born in 1875

Both Cæcilie Margrethe's parents and her siblings were all born in Egebjerg parish, so you can reasonably say that Cæcilie Margrethe was a true native to the parish she lived her entire life.

Cæcilie Margrethe was confirmed in Egebjerg church on April 28, 1878.

And then, as the habit prescribed, she came out to serve and in 1880 served Cæcilie Margrethe with farm owner Mads Peter Petersen in Glostrup Egebjerg.

In 1884, Cæcilie served Margrethe Christiansdatter at Braadegård, and the same year, on August 20, 1884, she married Hans Hansen in Egebjerg church

Cæcilie Margrethe was a beautiful young girl of just 15 years in 1880, where she, as mentioned, served with farm owner Mads Peter Petersen in Glostrup, Egebjerg. But in a marvelous way, both Cæcilie Margrethe and Hans Hansen came together to serve on Braadegaard with Johan Theodor Christian Wellendorf, and his son Niels Ulrik Wellendorf who was managing the farm at this time.

Braadegård is pretty idyllic right up to Kongsøre forest and down to the Lammefjord.

Hans Hansen and Cæcilie Margrethe Christiansdatter both came to Braadegaard between 1880 and 1884, which is remarkable - or maybe just very lucky - because in fact there were not many service people at Braadegård. Thus, in 1880, there were a total of 7 servicemen, an agricultural student, and a maid in the farm.

In any case, they have been together here at Braadegård, and it is probably also here that they have fallen so in love with each other that in February 1883 they laid the foundation for their large family with a total of 10 children (their first daughter Valborg Margrethe was born November 21 1884) and they decided it was going to be the two for life.

On August 20, 1884, the wedding was between the 20-year-old Cæcilie Margrethe and the 26-year-old Hans in Egebjerg church. Hmd Lars Nielsen, Hans Hansen's deputy, was one of the groomsmen at the wedding.

As already mentioned, Hans Hansen and Cæcilie Margrethe founded their family in 1883 at Braadegård, and their daughter Valborg Margrethe was born on November 21, 1884 in Gjelstrup.

So the couple settled in Gjelstrup in 1884, but they moved somewhat around the years between 1884 and 1895.

Already in 1886 they had moved to Grevinge, Prejlerup Bro where they were insiders. Here, their next child, Hans Frederik, was born on 4.11.1886. Hans Frederik, by the way, was one of the 5 brothers who emigrated to America, which you can read more about here. Hans Frederik blev gift og fik børn, og han døde i 1980, 94 år gammel i staten Washington, USA.

In 1889, August 7, Valdemar was born. At this time, Hans and Cæcilie were tenants in Hølkerup with old Lars Peter Larsen who has lived in Hølkerup all his life. Valdemar was also one of the 5 emigrated brothers. Valdemar did not get married and he had no children either. He died in 1964, aged 74 in the state of Minnesota, USA.

Hans and Cæcilie still lived in Hølkerup in 1890 as tenants with Lars Peter Larsen. And they were still very productive. In addition, Lars Peter Larsen was an old man, so I wonder if it was not Hans Hansen and Cæcilie who did run the house in practice. A real winning situation for all parties should be considered.

The next child was Nikolaj, who was born May 28, 1891 in Hølkerup. It is somewhat interesting that Lars Peter Larsen's son, Shoemaker Niels Larsen, is a godfather of Nikolaj's baptism. Hans and Cecilia were still tenants in Hølkerup at this time. It is almost felt that Hans and Cecilia saved up to "something bigger". Nikolaj was also one of the 5 emigrated brothers. Nikolaj was the first of the brothers to emigrate, and he got married and had children in the United States. Nikolaj died in the state of Minnesota, USA in 1967, aged 77 years.

On July 21, 1893, Hans and Cæcilie were still tenants in Hølkerup, but that did not stop them from continuing their high productivity. Because on this lovely Friday, Hans Sejr was born. Hans Hansen's and Cecilia's 5th child. There was also the change that Hans Hansen had become a land post. The family was well ahead in the world. Hans Sejr was also one of the 5 emigrated brothers. Hans Sejr got married and had children in the United States. He died in the state of Minnesota in 1973, aged 79.

In the spring of 1895, major changes occurred in the lives of Hans and Cecilia.

Landpost Hans Hansen rented on March 1, 1895, a parcel of land by farm owner Mads Lyngard Boll, who was a farm owner and owner of the land in matr 8a in Glostrup Egebjerg (as a small curiosity it can be mentioned that matr 8a was the farm owned by Gunner Olsen , which I spent most of my time on during my summer holidays in Glostrup in the 1960s (much more about that can be read here).

The parcel Hans Hansen leased was what later became matr 8m which can be seen on the map below. It was the farthest corner of Mads Lyngaard Boll's field up against a road corner in Glostrup and a road to matr 9a which was the neighboring farm. It was a corner of Mads Lyngaard Boll's field that was not immediately applicable to him as a farmer and that was probably why he chose to parcel it out.

The arrow shows up to matr 8m (and 8p).

It is a bit interesting that Matric 8p is apparently never matriculated together with Matrilel 8m. This is interesting because matr 8p has served as an orchard for the property on matr 8m, in Glostrupvej 33 Glostrup Egebjerg, for all the time I can remember the property, which is from the beginning of the 1960s, and when you see the property today, it appears the area that Matric 8p still covers as part of Matric 8m.

On the left is a picture of matr 8m today (year 2015) where it is clear that matr 8p still “hangs on” matr 8m as a garden (and now also parking area) as well as on the right a “close up” of the mentioned land from same card as above.
In the picture on the right you can clearly see that matr 8m is the farthest parcel against the road and the street, and that matr 8p is behind and constitutes the "rest" of the not very useful corner of the land.

But it was useful to Hans Hansen. Because Hans Hansen wanted to be a homeowner, so he built a house on the rented parcel between March 1 and September 30, 1895.

Here the house is photographed, probably around 1908-09, with Mother Cæcilie standing by the bedroom window, and some of the children out on the road in front of the house. It can be noted that the picture was taken before the parcel is matriculated, which can be seen, among other things. on the hedge in the background which clearly indicates that the later property 8p was not part of the property at this time

This was the house that both he and Cecilia were going to live in for the rest of their lives, and like Georg Hansen (which you can read more about here) lived all his life in.

There is no doubt that this house, Glostrupvej 33 Glostrup Egebjerg, was Landpost Hansen's great pride in which he could with great dignity house and feed his family.

But besides being a proud homeowner, Hans has also been smart. He rented the parcel in 1895 with the right to buy it for DKK 200, when it was at one point partitioned and matriculated.

Reason uncertain, the parcel was first matriculated in June of 1915, and at this time became matr 8m, which Hans Hansen thus bought for DKK 200, - in January 1916. It has been a very good return of Hans Hansen's DKK 200, - which, in addition to the bargain for the good 20 years that went from the lease to the purchase, was a reality all the time in Hans Hansen's own pocket. He was not without the skills of the good land post.

The matriculation of Matric 8m on June 19, 1915. It was certain at this time that it was agreed that the piece of land that later became Matric 8p could be included as an orchard for 8m. After all, much was done with a handshake and a word at that time.

Below is the deed on the property from farm owner Mads Lyngaard Boll to Hans Hansen dated January 24, 1916. The deed also shows that the parcel was rented March 1, 1895, and that it was purchased for the purchase price of DKK 200, as agreed in the lease contract.

Taking the journey from insider people (tenants) and living in other people's houses and farms to getting their feet under their own table in their own house did not stop the productivity of Cæcilie and Hans.

On September 30, 1895, Viggo was born in the house in Glostrup. It is noteworthy that at the time of Viggo's birth it was clearly stated that the parents were now House people in Glostrup.

Viggo was another of the 5 emigrated brothers. Viggo did not get married, and he died in the state of Minnesota in 1969, 75 years old.

The next child was Thorvald who was born April 1, 1898 in Glostrup. Thorvald died at the age of 13 on June 15, 1911, for whatever reason. Thorvald was the only one of Hans Hansen's children who did not grow up.

In 1901, the censuses were made with a cover for each house showing who was the owner. You could almost suspect Hans Hansen of being the sponsor of that idea. For there is no doubt that the Land Post was extremely proud of this front page in the 1901 census.

And here at Hans Hansen's "castle" the family resided in 1901. However, Valborg Margrethe was out to serve with farm owner Kirstine Pedersdatter at this time.

Valborg Margrethe later moved to Copenhagen and got married and had children there.

The next child in the family is Anna Kirstine who was born May 21, 1902 in Glostrup. Anna Kirstine was confirmed in 1916 and married in 1924 in Egebjerg, where she probably lived her entire life. Again, it was emphasized in the baptism that Hans Hansen and Cecilia were house people in Glostrup.

On June 17, 1904, Georg Hansen was born in Glostrup. Georg is the only living boy in the family who did not emigrate to America. On the other hand, he was very faithful to his birthplace and Georg lived in the house on Glostrupvej 33 throughout his life. Read more about Georg Hansen here. Georg Hansen got married and had children in Glostrup, and he died there in 1994, aged 90.

Hans Hansen and Cæcilie Margrethe's last child was Rigmor, who was born May 19, 1906. At that time, Cæcilie Margrethe was 42 years old, and had given birth to a total of 10 children. Pretty well done. Rigmor was out in 1921 serving with farm owner Laurits Rasmussen in Egebjerg where she also served with Georg. Her whereabouts after1921 is unknown.

In February 1921, Hans Hansen retired Landpost, and he and Cæcilie lived alone in the house on Glostrupvej 33. All children were either emigrated to America, married and relocated, or out and serving on the farms in the area.

Hans Hansen died on April 7, 1921, aged 63 years. A fantastic course of life, and a very energetic and determined gentleman whom you can only admire for his life's work.

In Hans Hansen's probate you can read that Cæcilie came to sit in unchanged living.

But as early as 1926, Cæcilie Margrethe handed the house over to her youngest son Georg Hansen, who, as you know, lived here all his life, founded his own family and created his own story there.

Cecilia Margrethe lived with Georg and his family in the house for many years.

On July 29, 1938, Cæcilie Margrethe died aged 74.

That was the story of Hans Hansen and Cæcilie Margrethe. An amazing couple who knew what they wanted and did. You can only admire that.
